Introduction to phonics games and activities
Hey there, I’m Sam, the proud father of two and the creator of Kids Book Club HQ. At Kids Book Club HQ, we’re all about making learning fun for children, especially when it comes to developing essential reading and language skills. In this blog post, I’m excited to share some engaging phonics games and activities that can help your little ones on their reading journey.
List of Phonics games and activities
1. Phonics bingo:
Create bingo cards with words or pictures that represent different phonics sounds. Call out the sounds, and children mark the corresponding word or picture on their cards.
2. Word Family Sort:
Provide a list of words with common word families (e.g., cat, bat, hat). Have children sort these words into groups based on their shared phonics patterns.
3. Alphabet Scavenger Hunt:
Hide letters around the room or outdoor area and have children find them. When they find a letter, they should name the letter and its corresponding sound.
4. Phonics Puzzles:
Create puzzles with pictures and words, where children have to match the word to the correct picture based on the phonics sound.
Alternatively I have included a link to a puzzle i have personaly used with my kids.
5. Rhyming Memory Phonics Games:
Create pairs of cards with rhyming words (e.g., cat and hat) and play a memory game where children have to find matching rhymes.
6. Phonics Hopscotch:
Draw a hopscotch grid with letters or phonetic sounds inside each square. Children have to hop to the correct sound and say it aloud.
7. Phonics games Relay Race:
Divide children into teams and place cards with words or sounds at a distance. They take turns running to the cards, reading them, and racing back to their team to tag the next player.
8. Phonics Storytime:
Read phonics-based storybooks that emphasize specific sounds or word families. Encourage children to identify and discuss these sounds as you read.

9. Letter Sound Twister:
Use colored tape to create a Twister board on the floor. Instead of colors, place letters or phonetic symbols on the circles. Call out a letter or sound, and children have to place their hands or feet on the corresponding circle.
10. Phonics Apps and Online Games:
There are many educational apps and websites that offer interactive phonics games and activities. Some popular ones include ABCmouse, Starfall, and Phonics Play.

11. Letter Sound Scavenger Hunt:
Give children a list of words that start with a specific letter sound, and have them find objects in the room that match those words.
12. Phonics Song Sing-Along:
Use catchy phonics songs or videos to help children remember letter sounds and word patterns.

13. Sight Word and Phonics Games Flashcards:
Create flashcards with sight words and phonics patterns. Practice these regularly to reinforce recognition.

Children take turns acting out words that start with a specific letter sound while others guess the sound and word.
15. Phonics Board Games:
Board games like Scrabble, Bananagrams, and Boggle can help reinforce phonics skills as children create words using letter tiles.
